As the first anniversary of the fateful earthquake approached, a slight but persistent uneasiness took hold of the capital's in- habitants. Fear was everywhere: "Perhaps it will happen again"; "A seer predicted there would be another one coming and this one will finish us"; "Not even the Cathedral will remain standing." Fortunately, nature's powers-so inclement a year ago no longer made themselves felt, and the morning of September 19, 1986, Mexico City woke up in calmness.
